Braintree + Shuttle

Braintree, a PayPal service, is a full-stack payments platform that processes credit cards, debit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay through a single integration. Its Vault feature securely stores customer payment information for repeat purchases and subscriptions, while its 3D Secure 2.0 implementation helps merchants meet Strong Customer Authentication requirements in Europe without adding unnecessary friction. Braintree supports marketplace and platform business models with split-payment capabilities, making it a natural fit for multi-sided platforms that need to pay out to sub-merchants.

Shuttle integrates with Braintree to give platforms access to PayPal’s payment ecosystem within a PSP-neutral framework. When a transaction is routed to Braintree through Shuttle, the platform benefits from Braintree’s native PayPal and Venmo support, its card vaulting capabilities, and its optimized authorization engine, all without being locked into Braintree as a sole processor. Payment Links generated through Shuttle leverage Braintree’s hosted checkout to present PayPal and Venmo as payment options alongside standard card entry. Note that Braintree is not available for Shuttle’s standard voice card capture, as Braintree accepts raw card data only on specially configured merchant accounts.

Using Braintree through Shuttle is especially powerful for platforms that want to offer PayPal and Venmo as payment options but do not want their entire payment stack dependent on a single provider. Shuttle enables intelligent routing where Braintree handles transactions involving PayPal wallets while card-only transactions can be sent to whichever processor offers the best authorization rate or pricing for that card’s issuing bank and region. This selective routing approach lets platforms capture the conversion benefits of PayPal’s customer base while maintaining the cost efficiency and redundancy of a multi-PSP architecture.
