Why NMI?
Overview
NMI (Network Merchants Inc.) is a full-commerce payment gateway that powers ISOs, independent software vendors, and payment facilitators across North America. Unlike consumer-facing processors, NMI operates as infrastructure for the payments industry itself — providing the gateway layer that ISOs and ISVs use to connect their merchants to acquiring banks and processors. NMI supports connections to over 200 processors, offers a robust recurring billing engine, and provides payment facilitator tooling that enables platforms to onboard and manage sub-merchants. Their Customer Vault securely stores card data for tokenized transactions, and Level 2/3 data pass-through helps B2B platforms qualify for reduced interchange rates.
Shuttle’s integration with NMI creates a powerful combination for platforms that already use NMI or want to leverage its extensive processor network. Through Shuttle, platforms can route transactions to NMI’s gateway as one of multiple processing paths, taking advantage of NMI’s 200+ processor connections for redundancy and optimization. Voice Checkout transactions flow through NMI with Shuttle managing the PCI-compliant voice session, while Payment Links and Embedded Payments leverage NMI’s tokenization and recurring billing capabilities. For platforms operating as payment facilitators, Shuttle adds multi-channel support on top of NMI’s payfac infrastructure, enabling sub-merchants to accept payments via voice, links, and embedded checkout without additional integration work.
By connecting NMI through Shuttle’s PSP-neutral layer, platforms gain the flexibility to use NMI for North American processing while routing international transactions to globally-focused PSPs. Shuttle normalizes NMI’s transaction responses, webhook events, and settlement data into a unified format, so platforms manage all payment activity through a single integration regardless of which gateway processed the transaction. This architecture is particularly valuable for ISVs migrating from a direct NMI integration to a multi-PSP strategy — Shuttle enables them to retain their NMI processing relationship while gradually adding alternative processors for geographic optimization, redundancy, or cost management, all without rebuilding their payment infrastructure.
